An interdisciplinary course that examines cultural thought through either premodern traditions or modern literature, film, and media, depending on institutional focus and curriculum design.

​

The course explores how Chinese society has articulated and interpreted:

​

• cultural values

• intellectual traditions

• ideological frameworks

• social and historical transformation

 

Rather than treating texts as isolated works, this course approaches literature and media as expressions of cultural logic and systems of thought, through which Chinese culture understands itself and engages with the world.

Course Tracks

This course may be offered in one of two formats:

Premodern Track

Focus on classical and early texts to examine:

• foundational philosophical and cultural frameworks

• early conceptions of order, ethics, and governance

• the formation of enduring intellectual traditions

 

 Modern Track

Focus on modern literature, film, and media to analyze:

• identity, nation, and modernity

• ideology, narrative, and power

• cultural responses to globalization and political change
